Minecraft’s Nintendo Switch 2 edition launched on 27 October, bringing Vibrant Visuals to Nintendo’s newer console. The release also includes the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, while existing Switch owners have different upgrade options depending on whether they own a digital or physical copy.

Mojang confirmed the launch in its official announcement. The important distinction is that this is the Switch 2 version, not simply the original Switch game running on newer hardware.

A brighter Overworld — with limits

Vibrant Visuals adds directional lighting, volumetric fog and dynamic shadows. The Mario-themed pack has also been updated for the visual system, giving familiar Nintendo locations a fresh look inside Minecraft.

There is a catch for couch co-op: Vibrant Visuals is not available in split-screen. Certain Marketplace worlds and content also do not support it. That qualification matters if the visual upgrade is your main reason for switching versions.

Check which upgrade applies to you

Mojang’s offer runs from 27 October 2026 at 9am Pacific Time until 31 January 2027 at 9am Pacific Time. Digital owners of Minecraft for Switch can claim the digital Standard Edition for Switch 2 free in most territories through Nintendo eShop. Japan, Taiwan and Thailand have small local charges instead.

Physical-copy owners should not assume they qualify for that same free offer. They are included in a separate discounted Ultimate Collection offer: launch the Switch game on a Switch 2 during the offer period and look for the in-game invitation.

Standard, Deluxe or Ultimate?

Nintendo’s launch breakdown lists three digital editions. Standard includes the base game and Super Mario Mash-Up. Deluxe adds extras including Nether Portal Wings, Rescue Dogs Mutts and 700 Minecoins. Ultimate includes the Deluxe content, adds Decocraft and Weapons and Tools, and raises the total to 1,000 Minecoins.

Minecoins bought or included on Nintendo devices must be spent within the Nintendo ecosystem. Compare the actual extras before choosing a bundle rather than treating the largest collection as an essential upgrade.

Your worlds and multiplayer

The official product listing confirms that Switch worlds can carry over. It also lists one to four players on a single system, with two to eight over local wireless or online. Cross-platform play requires a Microsoft account; online multiplayer requires a separate Nintendo Switch Online membership.

For South African players, we have not verified a rand price or local physical stock. Check the offer shown for your Nintendo account before buying. The Canadian prices on the linked Nintendo pages are not South African prices.
