Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux have received their free next-generation update on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Deep Silver’s 29 October launch announcement also confirms that the PC update is already available. If either game is sitting in your library, start there rather than assuming this is another remaster you need to buy.
This is an update to the two Redux games, not Metro Exodus or the upcoming Metro 2039. Deep Silver describes the work as an upgrade rather than a full remake or remaster, preserving the existing experience and visual identity.

What has changed?
The publisher lists true 4K at 60fps and an upscaled 4K mode at 120fps. The higher-frame-rate option requires a compatible television or monitor; these are announced specifications, not performance results from our own testing. Regional availability can vary, according to the launch notice.
The improvements also extend beyond resolution. In 4A Games’ developer-written Xbox Wire announcement, the studio details reworked textures, lighting, shadows, environmental detail and animation. The aim is to retain the atmosphere of the original Redux releases while improving how they look and respond on current machines.

That distinction matters if you are choosing between replaying a familiar campaign and buying a completely new experience. The upgrade is a reason to revisit these games, not a promise that their underlying stories have been replaced.
PS5 and Xbox do not have identical feature lists
On PlayStation, Deep Silver lists DualSense adaptive-trigger support and PSSR on PS5 Pro. On Xbox, it lists impulse triggers, spatial audio and TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing on Xbox Series X. The announcement also includes Xbox Play Anywhere and handheld support. Don’t read one platform’s feature list as a guarantee for every other console.
Xbox Wire specifically confirms optimisation for Xbox Ally and Ally X alongside the Series X|S release.
For South African readers, we have not independently checked every local storefront or older edition’s upgrade entitlement. Check the game you own and its available version before accepting a charge. A free upgrade for existing owners is different from the base game being free for everyone.

Two campaigns before the next Metro
Metro Redux packages Metro 2033 and Last Light’s campaigns, offering a starting point for players who joined with a later entry. The next game, Metro 2039, is scheduled for 4 February 2027.
There is no need to rush through both just because an update has arrived. If the trailer catches your attention, check your library and the performance options available on your own display before deciding whether this is the right time to return underground.
