There are special-edition controllers, and then there are controllers that speak directly to a particular kind of player. If you grew up chasing gold licences, shaving tenths off a lap at Trial Mountain or building a dream garage in Gran Turismo, Sony’s newly revealed DualSense Wireless Controller – Gran Turismo Limited Edition is aimed squarely at you.

Unveiled alongside Gran Turismo 7‘s Spec IV (Part 1) update on 14 October 2026, the controller celebrates 30 years of Gran Turismo with an unmistakably motorsport-inspired design. Sony has confirmed a worldwide release starting 10 December 2026, with pre-orders opening 22 October at 10:00 local time at participating retailers. South African pricing and participating local stores have not yet been confirmed in Sony’s announcement.

What makes this Gran Turismo DualSense different?

The design draws from the visual language of racing cars rather than simply printing a game character onto a controller. Sony describes racing stripes, motorsport-inspired graphics and a textured, carbon-fibre-style front plate. It is a collector’s piece that connects the DualSense to the craftsmanship and engineering that the series has celebrated since its earliest days.

That connection matters. Gran Turismo has always treated cars as objects worth studying as well as driving, from their proportions and paintwork to the sound of their engines. Translating that attitude into a controller makes sense, particularly for fans who have spent years adjusting brake balance and suspension settings to find the perfect lap.

Sony has not announced exclusive in-game abilities for this edition. Based on the announcement, the headline difference is the commemorative finish, not a new steering feature or a special racing peripheral. It remains a DualSense wireless controller, rather than a replacement for a dedicated wheel and pedals.

Pre-order date, launch date and South African price

Sony’s official global information puts pre-orders on Thursday, 22 October 2026, from 10:00am local time at participating retailers, with availability beginning Thursday, 10 December 2026. The controller will be sold in limited quantities, which makes local stock confirmation important.

The recommended prices announced internationally are US$84.99, €84.99 and £74.99, with retailer prices able to vary. Those figures are not South African prices. Converting them directly to rand would ignore local taxes, shipping, distributor pricing and retailer margins, so we are deliberately not publishing an estimated RRP.

If you’re buying from South Africa, watch official PlayStation retail partners and established local gaming stores for listings from 22 October. Check the seller, warranty, delivery date and final rand price before paying a deposit. An international pre-order announcement does not guarantee that every South African retailer will open orders at precisely the same time.

Why the 30th anniversary matters

The original Gran Turismo arrived on the first PlayStation in 1997 in Japan, making the 2027 anniversary a major milestone for the series. Sony’s 2026 reveal is part of that approaching celebration. Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi used the announcement to reflect on the original goal of sharing the beauty and enjoyment of cars, and thanked the community whose enthusiasm continues to shape Gran Turismo.

For long-time players, that is the emotional hook. The controller is less about getting faster and more about owning a small piece of the series’ history. It is the sort of accessory that could sit beside a cherished model car or a collection of Gran Turismo game cases.

Gran Turismo 7 gets more than a controller announcement

The reveal accompanied the free Spec IV (Part 1) update for Gran Turismo 7. Sony says the update adds Sportsland Sugo, six new vehicles, six World Circuit events, new Scapes locations and additional features including a Car Viewer and Experience mode. The official release schedule listed 23:00 PDT on 14 October, equivalent to 08:00 SAST on 15 October. An internet connection is required for the update.

That is good news for players who are not planning to buy another controller: the driving content is a separate, free update for existing Gran Turismo 7 players. Some vehicles still require in-game credits earned through play or purchased where supported.

Should South African GT fans buy it?

If you’re after a practical second controller, the standard DualSense may make more financial sense once local prices are known. But if Gran Turismo is the series that made you fall in love with cars, the limited-edition design has obvious collector appeal. The decision should come down to the actual South African price, warranty and how much the finish means to you — not fear of missing out before local stock is confirmed.

We will update this article when PlayStation or local retailers confirm a South African price and availability. Until then, the dates above are Sony’s announced global schedule, not a guarantee of local inventory.
