BioWare is closing, and early development on the next Mass Effect game is ending. The studio confirmed the decision on 21 October 2026, making this an official end to the current project rather than another delay to its reveal.

In its farewell announcement, BioWare reflected on more than three decades of storytelling and games including Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem. It said its immediate focus was supporting the team through the transition.

What EA has confirmed

In its own announcement, EA said a small team at BioWare had been working on early development for Mass Effect, but that it would not proceed. The decision also means closing the Edmonton workspace.

EA placed the closure within a wider change to its development priorities. It is bringing Respawn and DICE together on a future project and continuing work on Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game. Fight Night is also in pre-production. These are separate plans, not projects announced as replacements for Mass Effect.

The publisher said it would support affected employees in exploring other opportunities within EA. Neither statement provides a BioWare-specific number of affected employees or a detailed closure timetable.

A change from the previous Mass Effect update

The announcement reverses the picture presented on N7 Day, 7 November 2025. Executive producer Mike Gamble said then that the next Mass Effect was in development and that the team was focused exclusively on it.

That earlier update also described work with Amazon on a television series set after the original trilogy. The new closure statements do not explain what happens to that adaptation, so they should not be treated as confirmation that the television project has been cancelled too.

For fans in South Africa and elsewhere, the confirmed news is about the studio and the current game’s development. It does not establish that the Mass Effect franchise can never return. Any future project would need its own announcement.
