Final Fantasy Resonance has launched, giving Brave Exvius a new home as a standalone, turn-based RPG rather than a straight mobile port. Square Enix released it on 22 October 2026 for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Xbox on PC.
There is also a free demo, and Square Enix says its save data carries into the full game on all supported platforms. That makes it a useful starting point if you want to try the combat before committing to another lengthy RPG. Source: Square Enix’s launch announcement.
Brave Exvius, rebuilt in HD-2D
Resonance adapts the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Rain and his allies return, but the presentation and systems have been rebuilt for this release. It is the first Final Fantasy to use Square Enix’s HD-2D style, mixing pixel-art characters with three-dimensional environments.
The important distinction is the format. Xbox Wire describes a single-player, single-purchase game with redesigned combat and progression. This is not an announcement that the old mobile service has returned. Source: Xbox Wire’s launch feature.

Turn-based battles with a stagger system
Battles use an action-order timeline and enemy stagger meters. Breaking a foe’s stagger can interrupt it and create extra actions, so choosing a target matters beyond simply dealing the most damage. Visions bring abilities from familiar Final Fantasy characters into your party setup, with powerful Resonance attacks adding another layer to the system.
That combination should be worth a look for players who prefer planning their next move to reacting in real time. Whether the balance holds up over a full playthrough is a question for a review, not something a launch announcement can settle.
Before you buy in South Africa
Xbox confirms Xbox Play Anywhere support, allowing the supported digital purchase to work across Xbox console and Xbox on PC. That is a purchase benefit, not a claim that Resonance is included in Game Pass.
We have not verified a South African rand price or local physical-stock position. Check your chosen platform’s South African storefront for the edition, price and demo listing before buying. The platform list above comes from Square Enix’s launch announcement; it is not a guarantee that every local retailer has copies.
If the trailer catches your eye, trying the demo first is the most practical next step. You can judge the battle pace and presentation yourself, then decide whether to continue with the same progress.
