Science SARU is making another Ghost in the Shell animation project. The official announcement on 23 October says production is underway on a new work based on Shirow Masamune’s manga.

There is an important distinction here: this is being described as a fresh project following the 2026 television anime, not an announced second season. Its format, release date, cast and episode count have not been revealed.

Science SARU returns

The studio behind the 2026 series is confirmed to handle the animation again. That is the concrete creative connection between the two productions. The announcement does not name the new project’s director or say whether its story continues the television series.

For now, The Ghost in the Shell is the working title. Calling it a film, a sequel or a reboot would go beyond what has been announced. Fans have a production confirmation and an official visual, rather than a release plan.

A reveal in Ginza

The news first appeared through a surprise flyer handed out at the press preview for OPEN HOUSE at Dover Street Market Ginza in Tokyo. The event also included a signing session with Mokochan, director of the 2026 TV anime, connected to a GEEKS RULE collaboration. His presence at that event is not confirmation that he is directing the new project.

The franchise’s Japanese announcement places the new production within a series that began with Masamune’s manga in 1989 and has since taken several forms in animation. That history makes the unanswered format question particularly relevant: a new Ghost in the Shell production does not automatically mean another season of the most recent show.

No release window yet

There is no confirmed South African release date or streaming home for this new production. Distribution arrangements for earlier Ghost in the Shell titles should not be treated as confirmation of where this one will appear.

The announcement directs readers to future updates through Bandai Namco Filmworks’ official channels. Until those arrive, the news is straightforward: another Ghost in the Shell animation is in production, and Science SARU is making it.
