Factorio 2.1 has moved out of experimental testing and onto the stable branch. Wube announced the change on 23 October, bringing a large set of logistics, automation and presentation improvements to players who had stayed on version 2.0.

This is also the update Wube has described as its planned last major gameplay release before shifting towards long-term support. That does not mean bug fixes or compatibility work are ending.

Less friction in space logistics

The space-logistics changes let rockets carry mixed items, rather than requiring a separate full stack for each item type. For a small platform build, that can mean fewer wasteful deliveries of parts you only need in modest quantities.

Platforms can also exchange goods with other platforms in orbit. Requests can draw from any location, and circuit controls give players more ways to manage a platform hub. The focus is on making existing transport networks more flexible, rather than adding another planet to explore.

Back on the ground, the landing-pad unloading bay gives inserters direct access to arriving cargo. That lets you feed trains, chests or belts without treating robots as the only answer to a busy landing pad. Placement is limited to an area around the pad, so it does not remove the factory-layout puzzle.

The same developer breakdown explains new circuit connections for boilers and heat exchangers, plus separate input and output wire colours. These are practical changes for players who enjoy building backup power systems or increasingly elaborate automated factories.

Back up your factory before updating

The stable-release announcement warns that although 2.0 saves can load, some existing designs may break. Once a save or blueprint has been updated, it cannot be downgraded to 2.0. Wube recommends backing up anything important, and checking whether essential mods are ready.

Other additions include refreshed machine graphics and changes to space-platform balance. Space Age can also be played without the Quality feature, though it remains enabled by default. This is a polish-and-systems update, not a new expansion filled with extra planets or research trees.

Long-term support is still part of the plan

In its May roadmap, Wube explained that it wanted to conclude active gameplay development with 2.1, then concentrate on fixes, platform compatibility and modding support. That distinction matters: a final major update is not the same thing as abandoning the game.

The official download page now lists stable version 2.1.23 and Windows, macOS and Linux downloads. These sources do not establish a simultaneous Nintendo Switch update, so console players should check their version separately.
