Is xQc’s CoD Bag a Win for Gaming or a Loss for Players?
The numbers in gaming just got a whole lot crazier.
If you haven’t heard the news, streaming giant xQc recently dropped a bombshell: Activision paid him a flat $1,000,000 to stream Call of Duty: Warzone for just 12 hours. To put that in perspective, that’s about $83,000 per hour—more than most people make in a year, earned just by hopping into Verdansk for a single session.
The “Condensed” Sponsor
xQc revealed that he actually ignored Activision’s requests for an entire season. When they finally got a hold of him, they didn’t just offer a standard deal; they offered him the “rest of the budget.” Instead of playing a few times over two weeks, they let him knock it all out in one 12-hour marathon.
For xQc, it was the biggest “condensed sponsor” of his career. For the rest of us? It’s a massive talking point.
The Community’s reaction
While it’s cool to see a creator secure a life-changing bag, the Call of Duty community is feeling a bit salty, and it’s easy to see why.
- The Anti-Cheat Argument: Fans have been vocal about the state of the game, specifically the RICOCHET anti-cheat. The common sentiment on social media? “If you have a million dollars to give someone who doesn’t even main the game, why isn’t that money going into fixing the servers or catching the hackers?”
- The “Tourist” Factor: There’s always friction when a publisher pays a “variety streamer” a fortune to play a game, while the dedicated CoD grinders—who play 365 days a year—don’t see that level of investment.
Does it actually make you want to play?
This raises the big question for our community at The Game Room SA: Does seeing a clip of xQc or TheBurntPeanut actually make you want to jump back into Warzone? Or do these massive marketing stunts feel out of touch when the game itself still needs work?
I’ll be honest, the “Streamer Effect” is real, but at $1M for 12 hours, the pressure is on the game to actually be good enough to keep the new players xQc brings in.
