Nintendo has offered some reassurance to players who still want games on their shelves. Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s vice president and general manager for Latin America, says the company has no plans to abandon physical releases, according to comments reported by Nintendo Everything on 11 October 2026.
Speaking to YouTuber Coelho, van Zyll said: “There’s no plans to ditch physical.” He pointed to consumer preferences and the Switch 2’s support for both formats. That is a statement about Nintendo’s current direction, rather than a guarantee covering every future game or console.
A game box can still come with a download
For shoppers, there is another distinction to understand. Nintendo’s support guide explains that Switch 2 supports regular game cards and game-key cards. A game-key card does not hold the full game data; it authorises the download onto the console.
You need internet access and enough space in system memory or on a microSD Express card for that initial setup. Afterwards, the card still needs to be inserted when you play. Nintendo says the game can be started offline after its first launch, although that does not remove any individual game’s online requirements.

Can you still lend a game to a friend?
Yes, for game-key cards. Nintendo’s 23 September explanation of the formats says these cards are not tied to a Nintendo Account. Hand the card to a friend and they can use it, but their console must download the game too. A regular physical card, by comparison, carries game data on the card itself.
That makes the contents of the box worth checking, even if you always choose physical editions. Being able to pass a card around and being able to start playing without a large first download are different benefits. Decide which one matters most for your own setup.
What South African buyers should check
Before paying, inspect the product photos and description for the game-key-card label. Nintendo places that label on the case and provides the required storage amount on the packaging. If an online retailer’s photos are unclear, ask which version it is selling.
Our practical takeaway is to compare the whole experience: the purchase price, the space available on your console, and whether you have a convenient connection for setup. If you rely on a limited data bundle, a boxed purchase can still mean planning a download. If you are buying a gift, that preparation can also save the recipient an unexpected wait.
For collectors, Nintendo’s comments are encouraging. For everyone shopping for a particular game, the useful question remains: what exactly is in this edition’s box? The answer will tell you more about your first evening with the game than the word “physical” alone.
