South African Nintendo Switch 2 players have a new rhythm-driven adventure to check out: Ratatan. Nintendo’s South African listing gives the release date as 14 October 2026, while the Australian store lists 15 October. That difference matters if you have seen international release calendars claiming the game arrives tomorrow.

Developed by Ratata Arts and published by Game Source Entertainment, Ratatan mixes musical timing, side-scrolling combat and roguelike progression. It is not simply a rhythm game with a few enemies sprinkled in: your timing helps determine what an entire group does on screen.

What is Ratatan?

The adventure centres on Rataport, an island home to the Ratatans and their companions. Their goal is to journey towards the Everafter and meet a mysterious goddess. Getting there means repeatedly leading a colourful army into battle, learning the rhythm of encounters and adapting when a run goes wrong.

According to Nintendo’s official description, battles can feature more than 100 characters at once. Players use rhythm sequences to command their Cobuns while also moving their Ratatan, choosing positions and deciding when to retreat. That combination makes both timing and tactical judgement important. The hand-drawn-looking 2D presentation is part of the appeal, with expressive characters and energetic animation.

Can you play with friends?

Yes. The official Nintendo South Africa product page lists one player on a single system and online play for one to four players. If you want to team up with friends, note the fine print: Nintendo says online play requires an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Availability of particular online services can vary by region.

Switch 2 download size and supported modes

Nintendo South Africa currently lists a 1.7 GB download size for the Switch 2 version. That is relatively modest compared with many big-budget releases, although the final amount of storage required can change with updates. TV, tabletop and handheld play are all supported, so the game should suit both docked sessions and gaming on the move.

The listed language options include English alongside Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Korean and Chinese. Nintendo also identifies touchscreen features. The listing describes the game as action, music and RPG, which gives a useful idea of its hybrid design without reducing it to any one genre.

What about the South African price?

At the time of writing, the Nintendo South Africa listing used for this report does not provide a verifiable rand price in the information available to us, so we are not quoting one for Switch 2. Check the official South African product page on your account for the current purchase price and availability. Prices on other platforms or in other regions should not be assumed to match.

Why the release dates look different

Nintendo’s South African and Australian product pages currently show 14 and 15 October respectively. The developers also described a worldwide 15 October version 1.0 launch in a Steam announcement. Rather than guessing at an exact South African unlock hour, the safest approach is to check the live eShop listing on your console.

For players who enjoy music-based mechanics but also want a proper action challenge, Ratatan is worth a look. Its biggest question is whether those massive rhythm-led battles stay readable and satisfying over repeated runs — something that will become clearer once players have spent time with the full release.
