Modern Warfare 4’s launch week is underway. Campaign early access is live for eligible digital buyers, with DMZ early access scheduled for 20 October and the full game arriving on 23 October 2026. For South African players planning the week’s downloads and squad sessions, those are three separate milestones.
There is also an important purchasing detail: Activision says Modern Warfare 4 will not be included with Game Pass at launch. A subscription alone will not get you into the new game this Friday.

What you can play this week
- Now: the campaign is available through the digital pre-order or pre-purchase early-access benefit.
- Tuesday, 20 October: DMZ early access is scheduled to begin.
- Friday, 23 October: Modern Warfare 4’s full launch.
These are the publisher’s announced dates, not confirmed South African unlock hours. Activision notes that early-access timing can vary by platform and time zone, and may be affected by outages. Check your own platform’s countdown before arranging a late-night session.
Who gets campaign early access?
The campaign announcement lists both the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition as eligible. Supported platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. The benefit remains available until the full launch.
That makes the edition wording worth checking before you buy. The announcement specifically describes digital purchases; do not assume a physical copy includes the same early-access benefit. If you already own an eligible edition, check that account and its available game content before buying anything again.
A 16-mission campaign, with rewards to carry forward
The story spans 16 missions, following Private Park Hyun Jun during an invasion of the Korean Peninsula while John Price pursues the figure behind it. Campaign progression also unlocks rewards, including operators, cosmetics and XP tokens, for use in Multiplayer and DMZ at full launch.
For campaign-first players, the staggered schedule offers time to work through the story before the wider launch. There is no need to rush a purchase just to match everyone else’s pace, though: choose the edition for what you actually want to play, rather than assuming the most expensive option is required for early access.

The Game Pass catch
Activision’s 15 October clarification says the game must be purchased separately for launch and is not due to join Game Pass until the holiday period in 2027. The same update says Game Pass Ultimate retains access to older entries, including Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III.
For SA buyers, compare the rand price and edition contents on the storefront you use. We have not verified a South African launch price or a local unlock time, so neither is quoted here. If your plan was to play through Game Pass this week, settle that purchase decision before committing to a squad session.
