GTA 6 has put storage back on the shopping list. PlayStation Game Size reported a 210GB download for the Standard Edition on 27 October. That is a third-party report, not a file-size announcement from Rockstar.
As checked on 30 October, Rockstar’s game page and the public PlayStation and Xbox listings we inspected did not publish a storage figure. Rockstar still lists 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Treat 210GB as a reported PlayStation download, not a confirmed final installation size for every platform.
The concern is real even while that number remains unconfirmed: a big new game competes with everything already on your SSD. For South African players, downloading it again can also mean another long wait or another chunk of a capped data allowance. Call of Duty shows why one headline number rarely tells the whole story.
Download size, installed size and free space are different
A download figure describes data transferred to your device. Installed size describes the files occupying storage afterwards. A system requirement describes the available space a publisher asks you to provide. Those are related measurements, but they are not interchangeable. Compression, selected content and updates can change the relationship.
That also means a patch download should not automatically be added to the previous installation size. It may replace files rather than simply append new ones. Leave room for the installation process and follow the platform’s actual prompt; there is no verified GTA 6 patch allowance or universal “double the game size” rule to apply here.

Call of Duty’s confirmed figure needs its own label
Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 specifications, dated 1 October, require an SSD with 115GB of available space at launch on desktop PC. The page warns that mandatory updates may need additional storage.
That is a useful confirmed reference—not a like-for-like contest with GTA 6’s reported PS5 download. It is not a measured current MW4 install, an exact download amount or a PS5 requirement. Claiming GTA 6 is a particular percentage bigger would disguise those differences.
Nor does a large combined Call of Duty installation necessarily represent one game. The MW4 launch notes describe Warzone as an optional installation during setup. Activision’s content-management guide recommends the in-game Manage Files interface for removing games or individual modes. Check what you actually play before deleting another title.
For the next content drop, see our Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 coverage. New content is another reason to check current requirements rather than keep relying on launch figures.

Bigger games are not the only possible future
There is a useful counterexample in Activision’s August 2024 storage roadmap. It explained that a large reorganisation download could ultimately reduce occupied space. It also clarified that an alarming Black Ops 6 preorder estimate included other Call of Duty games, Warzone and content/language packs—not just that game. This is historical context, not a current MW4 size measurement.
Developers have other levers. Epic’s Oodle Texture documentation explains how texture encoding can make packaged distribution data compress smaller. That involves a quality-versus-size trade-off; it is not evidence that GTA 6 uses this particular Unreal Engine configuration.
Streaming assets can move some of the burden from storage to bandwidth. Activision’s 2024 roadmap describes texture streaming that reduces locally stored content, with higher-quality settings using more bandwidth. For someone watching their data allowance, a smaller installation is not automatically the cheaper option to keep playing.
The useful question for future releases is therefore not just “How many gigabytes?” It is how much choice players get over modes, texture packs and languages, how updates are packaged, and whether savings on the SSD create extra downloads later. Bigger numbers alone do not measure a better game.
What to do before GTA 6 arrives
Start with the free space you actually have, not the capacity printed on the console box. On PS5, Settings → Storage shows the current position. Sony says PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage, but must be moved back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD to play. That is different from an expansion drive that can run them directly.
For download planning, consider a clearly hypothetical 200GB download: at a sustained 20Mbps it takes roughly 22 hours 13 minutes; at 50Mbps, about 8 hours 53 minutes; at 100Mbps, about 4 hours 27 minutes. These are our ideal calculations using decimal gigabytes, excluding overhead, congestion and installation time—not GTA 6’s confirmed size or a promise about your connection.
Rockstar’s preorder support page also says the physical box contains a digital redemption code, not a disc. Buying a box should therefore not be mistaken for avoiding the download. Check your chosen retailer’s listing and the eventual console download screen before committing to a storage upgrade.
